Recovery from an ACL injury follows four phases. Each phase has a set of goals that should be met before moving to the next stage.

Phase 1: Acute (early) care

This phase is focused on reducing your pain and swelling, restoring your movement – especially your ability to straighten your knee – and getting your quads (thigh muscle) working. You may use crutches during this phase and then need help walking normally again.

Phase 1 goals:

  • Minimal swelling in the morning
  • Full knee straightening
  • Can bend the knee past a right angle
