Using crutches

  • Elbow crutches are often easiest to manage, but you can use underarm crutches if your arms do not feel strong enough.
  • When you go upstairs, move the foot of your uninjured leg up first, keeping your crutches behind/below you until you have your balance.
  • When you go downstairs, put your crutches on the step below first, then move the foot of your uninjured leg down to them.
  • Be aware when it’s wet or slippery, or when you’re in crowds so that you do not fall.
  • It’s a good idea to wear well-fitting shoes with a good grip. It’s not a good idea to hop around in your slides or jandals.
  • You cannot carry anything in your hands when using crutches. You may find it helpful to wear a bum bag and/or a backpack so you can keep what you need handy.
  • Let your physio know if you develop wrist or shoulder pain while using your crutches, so that they can explore options with you.
